Frontline Daily Devotion - Day 3 - Who Speaks For God?
EXODUS 20: 19: "And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die."
The people knew it was God that was thundering from the top of the mountain. He had called them to come up to Him, but they didn't want Him to speak to them directly. "You go for us, Moses!" Why are some folks so afraid that God might speak to them? Because they KNOW that if God truly speaks to them, then whatever He said must be done. Or else they're going to have to admit to themselves and to God that they will not obey Him. Scary thought, isn't it? To be in outright rebellion against God when He is talking to you! But if it is only the minister's voice I'm hearing, then it's not really a commandment from God, it's just a good SUGGESTION from the minister. We can always say, "Well, that's just your idea!" (or it's just the denomination's practice, or it's just the way your church does business). We might even admit that it's a good idea and it might even be God's truth. But since it wasn't God personally speaking to me, it's still up to me. So in effect, what we sometimes do is put a "man" between God and ourselves. Not Jesus, the only Mediator, because He also commands obedience, and He Himself is God, manifest in the flesh. No, we put a real "flesh & blood" man or woman who can take responsibility (and blame) for our problems. A Moses that talks to God for us, so we don't have to be confronted with what's really wrong in my life. Not the problems themselves, but the solution to the problem that God directs me to!
